How long will the divorce take?

Unfortunately, in many jurisdictions in Colorado, the courts have a backlog of cases filed that results in months of waiting to obtain a final hearing. In jurisdictions such as Arapahoe, Douglas, and Jefferson Counties, it is not uncommon to have setting for Permanent Orders 6 to 10 months from the date of setting. Denver and Adam's Counties are not much better than this time line.

The good news is that 80 to 85% of cases are settled in mediation resulting in an early setting or a nonappearance affidavit for a decree. This means that if you settle the case, you can obtain the divorce, or legal separation, in 90 days. We work hard in mediation to attempt to relieve the anxiety and fear of Court appearance by obtaining a reasonable and fair settlement.

There is also the option of obtaining a Temporary Orders hearing early in the case to resolve the urgent issue of parenting, support, and payment of bills well before the Permanent Orders hearing.
